The Sas was a lock complex built in the seventeenth century. It served shipping on the River Dender and regulated the water level in the towns canals. It could also be used to flood the surrounding meadows.
In 1978 the mouth of the Dender was moved and the locks lost their function. They were fully restored not long ago. The locks and the surroundings of the lock basin are now a special site alongside the old Dender, an elegant transition between town and countryside. It is a hub of cycling routes and walks.
